Emo Gym is a journey of reflection, learning and self-discovery within a group setting. It helps people discover more of how they operate, communicate and relate.
Emo Gym creates the opportunity to exercise the emotions and challenge and change thinking processes. It assists self-empowerment by providing an understanding of how beliefs, values, assumptions, thinking, feelings and behaviour impact the self and others. Emo Gym is training and the practice of critical reflection to gain greater awareness of personal styles and behaviours, obtain feedback and set goals for change.
Just as people use a gym to assist in training for physical fitness, Emo Gym creates fitness in the affective and cognitive domains. Emotional and psychological fitness changes the way people perform and relate. Increased self-awareness and constructive thinking processes are the foundation for confidence, resilience and self-empowerment leading to improved health outcomes.
The Emotional Gym is conducted in a group context with theoretical training and experiential practice. An experienced group facilitator conducts the sessions, in a gentle and professional manner. The group-directed process allows for exploration in the areas of participants interests. Procedures for emotional safety and confidentiality are implemented.
Group developed operating principals become the basis for honesty and trust to develop, allowing self-exploration and reflection in a safe environment. Creating a positive group experience allows individuals to explore their inner worlds and choose where they wish to gain robustness and fitness.
The intellectual and emotional experiences of individuals and the facilitator are shared, creating learning. The group then becomes a font of knowledge and wisdom to benefit
all members.
Learning and discoveries are documented, building a log of insight into the self, relationships, communication and behaviour.
Emo Gym is typically conducted with a group on a regular basis allowing time between sessions for research, self-exploration and change practice.
To assist in reflection, information gathering and feedback, group members complete activities between each session. These reflective and research activities assist in increasing awareness and knowledge. The times and tasks between sessions are adjusted to suit group and individual needs.
Various theoretical models and frameworks for reflection are used. Reflective practice is assisted by the use of a group log, personal journals, session ‘Learning Logs’ and other appropriate tools. Critical Reflection is used and embedded within the process.
The group and personal outcomes of the program are designed to nurture emotional and psychological development, build resilience and self-empowerment. The needs based nature of the program helps determine the focus of the outcomes.
